When to Repair or Replace an AC Unit

Should I repair or replace my air conditioning unit? A homeowner may ask this when their aging AC isn’t working as well. Many issues don’t involve a complete breakdown. Therefore, you often have a choice whether to spend on another repair or invest in an HVAC replacement

Replacing an AC unit prematurely isn’t always practical. Repairing an air conditioner is usually more affordable. But that all depends on the circumstances. There are several reasons to go one way or the other, which we’ll list below along with other considerations to help you decide.

Reasons to Repair an Air Conditioning Unit

Various issues don’t require replacing an AC unit. Some reasons to schedule an air conditioner repair include the following:

  • The System Runs Constantly: If your AC runs constantly without stopping, repair options range from changing a dirty filter to cleaning dirty coils to recharging the refrigerant. Addressing a malfunctioning thermostat or cleaning ductwork can also resolve the problem, depending on its source.
  • Your AC Blows Warm Air: It may seem like your old air conditioner has outlived its purpose, but it can blow warm air for several reasons. The thermostat may not be sending the right signal, the evaporator coil may be dirty, or an electrical component may be malfunctioning.
  • Airflow Is Reduced: Low airflow may not be an issue with your air conditioning unit. Opening closed vents or clearing a ductwork blockage can restore airflow. Or, an HVAC technician may need to repair the blower or motor.
  • Refrigerant Is Leaking: A refrigerant leak is a serious issue, but it can usually be fixed by sealing or replacing a damaged coil. Your local HVAC repair contractor then recharges your AC system so it has enough coolant circulating.
  • Your AC Is Noisy: Loud sounds such as rattling, buzzing, or screeching typically mean your air conditioner needs repair. They can be caused by dirt or a loose or damaged part. The problem will get worse if not fixed, but an air handler repair or other fix typically resolves noise issues.

Reasons to Consider Air Conditioning Replacement

An older air conditioner may be near the end of its life, or be too costly to repair, when it shows any of these signs it’s time for AC replacement:

  • The Temperature Is Never Cool Enough: If an AC unit doesn’t cool your home to the temperature you set on the thermostat, it may be failing. Air conditioning replacement means you’ll have a unit that can keep up with your cooling requirements.
  • Energy Bills Increase for No Reason: If your monthly utility bill increases regardless of the season or AC usage, consider replacing the unit. Air conditioners lose efficiency with age. Also, modern units are designed to run more efficiently. Therefore, AC replacement lowers energy consumption and utility costs.
  • Your AC Is a Safety Hazard: Bad wiring and electrical faults increase the risk of shock or fire. A refrigerant leak can cause skin irritation and respiratory problems. Older ACs can be contaminated with dirt, mold, or bacteria, while an unstable unit can fall or collapse and cause injury and property damage.
  • Multiple, Complex Problems: Simple issues like a clogged vent, faulty thermostat, or loose belt don’t require AC replacement. However, if one or more major components fail or the damage is extensive, it’s time to replace an air conditioning unit.
  • The Unit Is Past Its Life Expectancy: Air conditioners start to decline in performance after 10 years. Before then, a repair is almost always the solution. If your system is 15 to 20 years old, an AC repair may not be worth the money. Buying a new AC unit is often a wiser financial decision.

How to Decide Between AC Repair or Replacement

Whether you repair or replace an AC unit isn’t only about symptoms. Some signs of trouble listed above can overlap. Nonetheless, the age and overall health of the system must be factored in along with the following considerations:

Cost

An air conditioning unit over 10 years old can be expensive to repair. Cost factors include the complexity of components, availability of parts, and difficulty accessing the system. It may pay to invest in repairing a unit only a few years old. However, a repair that’s more than 50% of the cost of a new air conditioner is expensive, especially if it’s approaching the 12- or 15-year mark.

According to Angi, the average AC replacement cost is close to $6,000 (in 2024 dollars). When you consider the price of parts and cost of labor, paying for multiple major repairs in a short time can easily exceed the price of a new system. It may cost less to replace an AC unit.

Refrigerant

In recent years, environmental regulations on refrigerants have been updated. Since R22 Freon was phased out on January 1, 2020, most new air conditioners use R410A, which does not deplete the ozone layer. Freon has become increasingly expensive and hard to find. Most HVAC contractors won’t bother trying to obtain reclaimed sources, so it’s better to replace a unit with outdated refrigerant. But even if your system uses R410A, newer, more environmentally friendly formulations are becoming available, so ask your local AC company about your options.

Comfort

Consider replacing an air conditioner that doesn’t keep up with the cooling demand. If your home isn’t cool enough, is not being cooled evenly, or is more humid than it used to be, your AC may not be performing as well. It could also be oversized or undersized due to improper installation, additions to your home, or changes in its layout.

However, a repair can make sense if your home comfort has generally been ideal up until the current issue.

Efficiency Rating

An AC unit’s Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) reveals how efficiently it operates. Efficiency requirements are periodically updated. As of 2023, air conditioners in Southern California must be rated at least 15 SEER (or 14.3 SEER2 in the updated rating system). That means a 12 SEER AC from over a decade ago is likely wasting money. Air conditioners also decline in efficiency with age, so the unit probably uses more energy than it did when new.

Matched Components

If the outdoor or indoor units were replaced separately (whether by you or a previous homeowner), an equipment mismatch may be causing problems. Leaving the functional unit in place can save you money initially. However, a mismatched system runs less efficiently. It may also have a shorter lifespan and void the warranty so you must pay out-of-pocket for future repairs. Therefore, we recommend HVAC system replacement if your AC units don’t match.

New Technology

Another reason for replacing an air conditioner is the new technologies available. Some new AC units use two-stage or variable-speed technology. Multi-speed systems adapt to demand and control temperature and humidity more precisely.

Most newer models work with smart thermostats that learn your schedule. They can also be controlled via your smartphone. Other advancements include monitoring and communication, so you get maintenance reminders and performance alerts, and integration with home automation systems.

Opportunities to Save

Whether you repair or replace an AC unit may also depend on available financial incentives. Seasonal deals and coupons from HVAC companies can help you save. Manufacturers offer rebates; local power companies may also offer rebates for installing high-efficiency upgrades. Ask your AC installer about any programs in your area, and look into state and federal tax credits.

A combination of financial incentives can save hundreds to thousands of dollars on your purchase.
